Circular Commuter Bag

This project began with an exploration into product failure. I noticed that all of my backpacks were falling apart, which is normal for a well loved bag but when one part of the bag falls apart the rest is still usable. If I can replace the area of the bag that falls apart then I can extend the life of the bag. With that logic, a bag can be designed with the intention of being repaired in the future rather than with the intention of being replaced by a new bag

Fall 2024

Problem

Backpack components have different lifecycles, so all material is lost as soon as the first component fails.

Inspiration

Root Cause

Backpacks can’t last forever because they need to be made of materials that conform to the human body.

Prototype

Final Product

From the prototype, I got a better understanding of the construction, dimensions, and fill. Although the prototype had no pockets, straps, or padding, this gave me an idea of how to fine-tune the next prototype.
